OKLAHOMA COUNTY-- A plan to protect low-income, minority students at Crooked Oak Public Schools from the harmful effects of the proposed Oklahoma County jail is now in jeopardy. Commissioner Jason Lowe is moving to rescind a previously approved land purchase that would allow the school district to relocate its athletic fields, currently located just yards from the future jail site.

The Oklahoma County Board of Commissioners approved the land deal earlier this year following strong community backlash over the jail’s proximity to school facilities. Crooked Oak is the poorest district in the county, serving a predominantly minority student population long underserved in access to safe infrastructure.

“Rescinding this contract sends a message that low-income minority students don’t matter,” said Commissioner Myles Davidson, who supported the original deal. “We committed to protecting these kids—backing out now would be irresponsible and disgraceful.”

The purchase was legally and transparently approved, with funds allocated as part of a broader plan to mitigate harm to nearby neighborhoods. Reversing the agreement could carry legal and financial consequences.

“This is about protecting children, not politics,” Davidson said. “Crooked Oak students already face more barriers than most. We should be clearing the path for them, not adding new obstacles.”

Davidson, the only commissioner with a school-aged child, emphasized the real-world impact: “These aren’t abstract issues. These are real kids—and a real opportunity to do right by them.” The Board will revisit the matter at an upcoming meeting. Davidson is urging the community to speak out in support of keeping the County’s promise to Crooked Oak.
