DA’s Office Dismisses Case Against Roshaun Jones

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

September 5, 2024

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office dismissed murder charges against Roshaun Jones. Jones is accused of murdering Nekia Jackson, 42, and Russ Roberts, 60, at a Del City laundromat on January 23, 2017. Jones was arrested by the Del City Police Department on January 27, 2017, and the Oklahoma County DA’s Office filed the following charges on February 2, 2017:

  • Ct. #1: Murder in the First Degree
  • Ct. #2: Murder in the First Degree
  • Ct. #3: Robbery with a Firearm
  • Ct. #4: Felon in Possession of a Firearm

The decision to dismiss without prejudice comes as prosecutors were preparing to go to trial on September 9, 2024. Originally set on September 10, 2018, this case has had numerous unforeseeable roadblocks including the retirement of a judge, the deaths of the lead detective and a public defender representing Jones, the covid pandemic, and a new prosecution team being assigned the case after the election of a new District Attorney. This case is not closed. For that reason, specifics about why the decision to dismiss was made cannot be released at this time. Prosecutors did meet with the families of Ms. Jackson and Mr. Roberts to personally inform them of the decision.

Despite the charges in CF-2017-0673 being dismissed, Jones will not be released from custody. He is currently serving a 15-year sentence in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) after pleading guilty in October 2023 to five drug-related charges in CF-2022-2175. Jones was transferred from ODOC custody to the Oklahoma County Detention Center and booked in on August 1, 2024, in preparation for the September jury trial. He will now be released back to the custody of ODOC to serve out the remainder of his sentence in CF-2017-0673.

The District Attorney requests the investigation continues in this case in pursuit of justice for Ms. Jackson and Mr. Roberts and because the case against Jones was dismissed without prejudice, murder charges can be re-filed against him in the future.

Criminal charges are based on probable cause to believe a person has committed a crime. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
