Oklahoma County Gears Up for Unpredictable Winter Conditions: Emphasizes Preparedness and Safety Measures

**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**

January 12, 2024

Oklahoma County – As the winter season brings unpredictable weather, Oklahoma County remains vigilant and prepared with comprehensive strategies to ensure public safety during icy conditions. Understanding the challenges posed by winter weather, the county emphasizes readiness, prevention and responsive communication to navigate potential challenges effectively.

Oklahoma County acknowledges the uncertainty of this season and stands ready to address it head-on. With three dedicated crews stationed in District 3, the county ensures continuous availability around the clock, ready to tackle any weather-related issues promptly.

Salt remains a crucial weapon in combating icy conditions; However, the county is aware that its efficacy diminishes below 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Acknowledging this, alternative strategies are being considered to address extreme cold weather scenarios. Acting early is paramount in preventing the bonding of ice and asphalt. This reduces the formation of stubborn ice patches that are more challenging to clear later. This proactive approach aims to mitigate potential hazards on roadways.

The county and state have prioritized specific routes to ensure efficient clearing. Snow route information is readily available on the county's official website, https://www.oklahomacounty.org/county-information/snow-routes,  guiding residents during winter weather events. The county has also enacted pre-treatment measures on bridges and intersections before snowfall. This step aims to create safer conditions in crucial areas prone to weather-related risks.

The county employs a diverse array of equipment, including, moto graders, loaders, and bobcats, each playing a pivotal role in effectively clearing roads and ensuring safer passage for residents.

Ensuring access for emergency vehicles is a top priority. Oklahoma County has implemented measures to guarantee unimpeded access, even amidst adverse weather conditions. The county office maintains a 24-hour phone line (405-713-2180) to address any weather-related concerns promptly. Committing to swift and effective responses, the county prioritizes keeping residents informed and safe.
