FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“Oklahoma County has more than $105 Billion worth of property---the most value of property for ANY COUNTY in the state of Oklahoma, based on the Official Abstract filed with the Oklahoma Tax Commission,” said Oklahoma County Assessor Larry Stein.

“Comptroller Blake Ellis calculated, reviewed and analyzed more than 360,000 lines of data to make ALL the data and dollars balance—it’s similar to the accuracy required to shoot a BB gun from each end of a football field and having the BBs collide.  It’s an amazing achievement by the staff of the Oklahoma County Assessor’s Office,” said Stein.

Merriam-Webster defines an abstract as taking lots of data and making a form with all the important information listed.’

“The abstract is the foundation, the essential document, which contains information needed by public schools, cities and towns and other beneficiaries of the property tax.  The abstract with the estimate of assessed values is the first necessary component of the balanced-budget process for local schools, public colleges, technology centers, cities and towns, libraries, essential county government services and county health departments,” Stein said.

“Each county in Oklahoma is required to file ‘an abstract’ with the Oklahoma Tax Commission reporting the value of all the property in the county, along with other summaries of various categories of property,” Stein said. This process represents more than 82 percent of the funds the county uses to provide law enforcement, secure records, public safety and other essential county services.

“In addition to the $105 Billion value, Public Service Property will also be added in a later filing and will put the total value at more than $107 Billion in the 720 square miles making up Oklahoma County,” Stein said.

This increase from last year of 7.4 percent means Oklahoma County represents approximately 23 percent of the ENTIRE state of Oklahoma’s property value estimated at more than $450 Billion.  The total value of all the property in Oklahoma County in 2005 was around $32.6 Billion.  We have seen a more than 220 percent increase in 20 years.  Because of the constitutional assessment limitations on real property first passed by voters in 1996, Oklahoma County residents saved $1.6 Billion in lower property taxes, $218 Million just last year.

“I’m so proud of the entire assessor’s office; everyone accomplishes all the little things that turn into the big accomplishments achieved every year,” Stein said.
